“You have to understand that no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land”. Ruth understands this quote by Warsan Shire all too well. Not only is she an Attorney practicing Immigration law, but Ruth herself also entered the United States by boat as a small child. Her mother, fearing deportation to Haiti from the Bahamas, fled to the United States in search of freedom and a better life. As a child, Ruth lived undocumented for many years and what we today call “Dreamers” was once her story. Her story as an undocumented immigrant is not much different from most undocumented children except that now, she gets to help those whose position she once occupied. Ruth is the owner of her law firm and she handles immigration matters that involve family petitions, defending deportation cases, Temporary Protected Status, green card cases, asylum matters, citizenship, and much more. Ruth is known for her humble nature but she zealously represents her clients with vigor and integrity. As a former Public Defender, Ruth values the tenets that everyone, no matter where they are from or how they look, is entitled to have quality legal representation. Owning her own law firm has allowed Ruth to assist the many underrepresented immigrants in the United States. As a Black woman of Caribbean descent, the notion that representation matters makes even more sense in the Courtroom and dealing with government agencies. Oftentimes Black immigrants and other immigrants of color do not get to see someone who looks like them and is actually fighting to help them. Keeping families together is imperative, and as a mother and wife, Ruth understands the value of family. Ruth’s goal is to continue representing the Immigrant community not only with the actual representation in court or in front of government agencies; her goal is to continue opening the eyes of those she encounters to know that Immigrants have and will always continue to contribute to the greatness of the United States.
