Maria Aybar-Imbert Rivera

50 Under 50' 2022

by Alex McCurry
in 50 Under 50

Age: 30

Company Name: MA Interiors

Position In The Company: Founder, Partner and Principal

María Aybar-Imbert Rivera is the Principal, Founder and Owner of MA Interiors, an interior and architectural design firm primarily based in Texas that operates remotely. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, María graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a minor concentration in Sustainable Design. During her time at the Pontifical Catholic University, María won Best Design for her capstone project, Vulnerable City, which earned her the Francisco Luis Porrata-Doria Medal in 2014. Upon graduating, María went on to work at Air Architects, an architecture firm in San Juan, where she obtained experience in both the construction and design industry; as well as developed one-on-one client relations.

After acquiring experience in the field, María developed an interest in the business side of architecture, which led her to apply to the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico’s Graduate School of Business Administration, where she specialized in International Enterprise. During her studies, she realized the crucial role business administration plays with regard to achieving the best possible outcome for any given architecture project. Obtaining a master’s degree in Business Administration has made María a more well-rounded designer.

In 2017, Maria moved to Dallas, Texas, where she founded MA Interiors in 2020 as a result of the COVID pandemic. During that time, she realized there existed a need for enhancing people’s quality of life through their homes. While adapting these homes to the new “work from home” environment, there was also an opportunity to create fun and flexible spaces within the homes for the family to create memories in.  As an interior design and architectural company, MA interiors aspires to solve problems through dynamic, creative, and innovative designs. The company’s mission is to improve clients’ quality of life by enhancing functionality and design in spaces. MA Interiors has developed a broad portfolio, ranging from residential to commercial projects of all sizes, across the United States and Puerto Rico. In 2021, María was named by the New York Journal as one of the “Top 30 Interior Designers to Look Out for in 2022.”

One of the primary goals for MA Interiors includes reducing the negative impact construction has on the environment through sustainable alternatives. Over the years, sustainable and eco-friendly designs have become a passion for Maria, which is why she intends to translate that passion throughout her designs, where aesthetics, usefulness and sustainability all complement each other.

Maria is the proud wife of Dr. Carlos Trigo MD. Together they have two beautiful children, Caterina, three years old, and Ignacio, five months old. They like to spend their free time planning outdoor activities. They particularly enjoy going to the beach and participating in various water sports, such as surfing and kite surfing. Maria’s hobbies also include yoga, painting, drawing, reading, and watching movies.
