Chanelle Smith is an FY1 doctor working in East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. Featured in the Guardian, the Bristol Post, the Epigram and interviewed by BBC Bristol Radio, she has successfully inspired many through her volunteering experience as a medical student during the pandemic. This further led her to get featured in a children’s book honoring Captain Sir Tom Moore: One Hundred Reasons to Hope. She was recently selected to become an ambassador for the Captain Tom Foundation and will be working on projects alongside her medical work to support the foundation.
During her studies, Chanelle became determined to resolve some of the health inequalities that exist in the BAME community. She has always been driven to improve healthcare for BAME mothers and newborns through her role as an ambassador for BAME Maternity. Chanelle has been invited to speak at their conferences about the impacts of health inequalities and will raise money through hiking trips and epic adventures to Switzerland and Greece. She will further help underprivileged students to get into medical school through her new role as a Chief mentor of Medic Mentor.
With a passion for pursuing ophthalmology as a career, Chanelle scored in the top 10% of the Duke-Elder Examination and was invited to feature on the Royal College of Ophthalmologist podcast: Eye to Eye to share her hints and tips to medical students. She is involved in multiple research projects and has presented her findings at 12 national and international conferences. She has also conducted an audit to address the existing barriers of young diabetic patients who are attending their diabetic retinopathy screening appointments. This project won the best poster at the National Foundation Doctors Presentation Day. While her passion for teaching has enabled her to bag the National Teaching Award, she has additionally contributed to a dermatology textbook, Dermatology Cases in Skin of Color, a book that aims to educate medical professionals about skin conditions in different ethnicities. Her relentless work has further led her to get nominated as an exceptional “North West local leader”.
A South-African born, Chanelle has always tried to stay connected with her roots. Her work to empower black communities in Ghana got awarded with the Pius Adesanmi Memorial Student Award for outstanding contribution to Pan-Africanism. It was further celebrated by the University of Bristol for International Women’s Day and she is recently reinvited to speak at a regional conference to inspire the next generation of medical students.
