If the game of side hustle had a winner, it would be the 28-years old daughter of hip hop legend jam Master Jay. Tyra Myricks, tackling a day job and five side hustles, carries a proud legacy along with her.
Being a famous American DJ’s offspring would possibly have led her to live off her dad. But it is not the case with the young entrepreneur who has taken just the opposite route. Besides working as the head designer of Drake’s clothing line OVO, Tyra owns a fashion level, a branding agency, and co-owns LA’s first black-owned gym. Adding more feather to her cap, she just opened a pizza shop in LA with Tyanna Wallace, daughter of rapper Christopher Wallace. Plus, she has also co-created a website called Entrepherneur Tour to provide women start-up owners with resources.
“It’s Never An Easy Game”
That’s what Tyra said about being a businessperson. “Everybody on the internet talks about the glorious side but nobody shares the hard part to get up every morning.”
So, What Is Her Process? Sneaking A Peak Into A Typical Day In Her Life
Waking Up At 5.45 A.M
Like other successful entrepreneurs, Myricks wakes up before the dawn breaks, prays, showers, gets ready, and downs six shots of Espresso! Next, she heads to The Method to open the gym in the morning.
She Opens Her Gym At 7 And Gets Breakfast
After arriving at the gym, she gets the place ready for the patrons and then grabs her breakfast – a green smoothie these days. Last year, she co-owned The Method after investing a significant amount she never disclosed. During the COVID-19 lockdown, they moved the sessions to the outdoors, saving a lot on maintenance. Right now, the gym has around 300 members with a membership of $99 a month- quite a feel of exclusivity, isn’t it? The sophisticated vibe is present in all her ventures.
Next, She Preps For Her Day Job
Her day job at OVO starts at 9.30 a.m. If she’s still in the gym, she connects with the OVO team over Zoom calls to discuss the upcoming projects and it lasts till 11’o clock. Her consistency is the driving force behind all the crazy work schedules. Tyra always tries to adopt the formula a lot of successful people use and creates her recipe to achieve her goals. Drake offered Tyra the position at OVO after seeing some of her merchandising and branding work for an artist. In 2017, she moved from NY to LA to accept the job.
Working On Her Fashion Side Hustle
At 11.30 sharp, Tyra heads to the factory she co-owns and starts working on her Wealth fashion line. They primarily sell online and their client is just one store located in downtown LA. “This is not because we don’t get other stores to sell our stuff to, but we like to maintain exclusivity.”
She reaches the headquarters of Wealth around 2 p.m and finally eats her lunch as she packs the orders to ship them. She takes another double shot of espresso to keep it going and heads to the store downtown to ship off the wealth packages.
Moving On To The Pizza Shop
Next, Tura visits the pizza shop she just opened. Being a New Yorker staying in Los Angeles, Tyra felt there was “no good pizza shop there” and she came up with Juicy Pizza.
Grabbing Her Dinner At 7 P.M.
After meeting her friends for diner at 7, Tyra grabs shipping bags from a storage unit. She gets back home around 9 p.m. and starts unwinding a bit. But she keeps up with her work emails while working on the branding agency she co-founded. She falls asleep around midnight and she will wake up in five hours to do it all over again! When you ask about what a day looks like in her life – it’s literally A DAY! Tyra compared it to a “constant revolving door that never stops.”
